Annual General Meeting Report 2024

It’s important to start my report with thanking the committee members for their continued support and enthusiasm for all things Kallaroo. We welcomed a new Committee Member, Ken during 2024 he has been a very welcome addition to our committee. I would also like to thank Jeff for continuing to assist the association with all things financial and supporting our Treasurer Mary. Also, a big thank you to Cass and the North Shore Community Hub for hosting us here tonight.

2024 Highlights

Beach Water Quality – It seemed like immediately after the community backlash from the groyne proposal along Whitfords and Mullaloo Beach had subsided our Community was left wondering what was happening with the usual pristine water quality we have at our beach.  It was obvious that something was changing to impact the water quality so close to our coastline.

Investigation into Beach water quality in our area is now finally progressing!  With independent consultants engaged by the State Government

It is so important that while at our beach if you notice the discoloured discharge, swim at our beach and notices the poor visibility, tastes or smells the foul water you are encouraged to submit a report to Environment WAtch who have an Online Pollution Reporting Form or you can call the Hotline weekdays between 8.30am and 4.30pm on 1300 784 782. Outside of these hours you will be directed to an automated message with an option to leave a message or if you are reporting a major pollution event, elect to speak to an operator.  Environment Watch also have a Facebook page which you can follow for information—https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558988558313

Development of Secondary Centres – Warwick & Whitfords

We have been keeping a close eye on what is happening over in and around Warwick Shopping Centre – why you may ask! Well firstly both Whitfords and Warwick Shopping Centres are classified by the State Government Planning Policy as Secondary Activity Centres in the City of Joondalup and have the same planning rules applied to them. Secondly a development group have bypassed the City of Joondalup and the proper progress of community consultation on development of an Activity Centre Plan and have applied to the State Government Significant Development Assessment Unit (SDAU) for planning permission to develop a site with tall apartments. SDAU was created by the state government under cover of 'Covid'. This unaccountable panel is now infamous for making poor and unpopular planning decisions that ignore the wishes of the community.

Community ‘feedback’ has recently closed on this development, and we are waiting to hear when it will be considered by the SDAU. We’ll keep you updated as we don’t want to see development applications spring up in and around Whitfords which don’t meet the current Activity Centre Plan or our Communities expectations for development.

Proposed New Car Park – Northshore Drive

Another issue we are monitoring is the possibility of construction of a new car park in Kallaroo opposite the existing Northshore Drive Car Park (where the James Bean Coffee Van is located).

Currently in its draft stages without any budget allocated to it, the City of Joondalup are investigating whether they can obtain some State or Federal Government funding for the project. If this moves forward and there is a formal proposal it will be released for community consultation so we will continue to monitor this one.

Sponsorship – Membership is still free

We continue to be grateful to our 2 sponsors who enable us to offer free membership to the association. Special thanks to our main sponsor Listed Estate Agents who provide additional support to fund the printing and circulation of our newsletter to the whole of Kallaroo. We encourage our members to support Jonathan and Paula Alsford’s local independent business when they can.  https://listedea.com.au/

Our thanks also go to Karen and team from Pinnaroo Plaques Bronze and Granite for her continued sponsorship and support. https://www.pinnaroocemeteryplaques.com.au/

Thank you and I look forward to a successful 2025 for our great little suburb Kallaroo.
